Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that DOT drug testing and FMCSA compliance can be complex. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive. If you still have questions, feel free to contact us.

General Questions

Q: What is DOT drug and alcohol testing?

A: DOT testing refers to drug and alcohol screening regulated by the Department of Transportation for safety-sensitive employees, such as CDL drivers. It includes pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.

Q: Who is required to take DOT drug tests?

A: Any employee who operates commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) that require a CDL and are regulated by FMCSA is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Testing Process

Q: How long does a drug test take?A: The sample collection process typically takes 10–15 minutes. Lab results are usually available within 24–72 hours.

Q: What substances are tested in a DOT drug test?A: DOT tests screen for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP).

Q: What if an employee refuses a drug test?A: Refusal to test is treated the same as a positive result under DOT rules. The employee must be removed from safety-sensitive duties and complete the return-to-duty process with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)

TPA & Compliance

Q: What is a TPA (Third Party Administrator)?A: A TPA manages your company’s drug and alcohol testing program on your behalf. We handle random pool management, policy guidance, test scheduling, and recordkeeping to ensure compliance with DOT regulations.

Q: Do you offer consortium services?A: Yes. We provide consortium enrollment and management for owner-operators and small employers to stay compliant with FMCSA regulations.

Q: What documentation do I need to maintain?A: Employers must retain records of testing, employee test results, random pool selections, and compliance documentation. As your TPA, we help maintain and organize these records for you.
